Seeing a common form of gen-x pride a little bit here and a lot on TikTok that’s kinda funny and I know it’s mostly trauma-informed irony but — it hovers right close to that line of “my folks beat the tar out of me, so what are you complaining about?”
Besides? We may be the last ones to have had it so good. We grew up in the golden years between asbestos and anti-vax.

@pdcawley I mean they were some awful years for me personally, and the seeds of all this were already highly visible — cannot ignore the depressing popularity of Rush Limbaugh — but Nazis knew they’d get punched, and everybody not in a backwoods militia got vaccinated so I wasn’t worried about pandemics or fucking measles.

Bouncy Dog is such an adorable little emotional manipulator. Bouncing around all morning, but when it’s time to go out back instead of for a walk (doctor’s orders) he’s all “but my paw I can’t go out back I’ll hurt my paw we should go for a walk instead”

As a person who enjoys CSS, I continue to dislike working with Tailwind. Just about ready to settle on my answer for the occasional interview question:
“Have you worked with Tailwind?”
“Yes. It sucks. Next question.”
I mean I guess it’s fine for people that hate or fear CSS.

@grmpyprogrammer tangentially relevant anecdote: In the days of more hair and less padding, I had a button that read “Anything not nailed down is mine. Anything I can pry loose is not nailed down.”
Been thinking about that button a lot with the “everything is the only option” approach to AI feeding.

@mikaellundin that’s what I anticipated in this situation, but I’m having some sort of build cache issue. I add bg-lime-700 and it shows up in dev, but I do a build and it does not. Feeling very “if I was using Sass I’d be home now” at the moment.

@mikaellundin I think I figured it out. That class specifier is used in a shortcode — a shortcode defined as a JavaScript function in my .eleventy.js.
TypeScript didn’t build it because TypeScript never saw it.
My core grumble remains, but at least the mystery is solved and the experiment can continue.

On “AI” I should mention I do have a regularly needed use case for text generated from LLM prompts. It helps me navigate neurotypical communication patterns.
No it won’t give me the correct answer to a question. God no. But I can see how an answer should be shaped.

@monospace I got into CSS early enough that you could read the entire spec without hurting yourself. Never tracked the cutting edge, but absorbed new features as they became useful for me. Mostly I trust the browser and don’t get fancy.
Those utility classes seemed nice for building a Web application, but now I’m not so sure.

@WuMargaret I think Eleventy is a fantastic SSG to build skill with. The tutorial starts you with a single HTML file and lets you build from there. It can get complex, but it doesn’t have to.
Fantastic learning community too. 11ty Bundle ‘Getting Started’ section has an overwhelming number of tutorials. Track #Eleventy here and you’ll see a lot of projects big and small.

@endomain I think scratch the outer layer of crankiness about Tailwind, and you’ll find my underlying issue is with the contortions we’ve gone through over the last few decades to make the Web an application platform.
