Not at all related okay maybe a little bit if Notion the tool / service wasn’t driven by making investors happy I suspect I would enjoy it much more.

Anyhow blood pressure was surprisingly high at an appointment the other day, so I repurposed a long-ignored #Notion journaling setup to start tracking that somewhere I can easily pull up on the phone for future appointments.
I would assume there are better ways to write my little blood pressure summary formula, but I have not yet found evidence of any.

@spinningthoughts frankly I’m shocked at the limited formula selection. If I had any kind of money flow I’d try this maybe in Coda. As it is, I’m gonna look at some still-surviving subscriptions to see if any let me do math and multiplayer.

@spinningthoughts re: everyone doing block editors, roughly every day I imagine an alternate interface to Logseq leaning on ProseMirror or similar for honest-to-goodness block editing.

@flyingsaceur @tek in my admittedly very shallow and meandering tests, the Java applications and frameworks I try all seem to work without complaint using alternate JDKs.
(Haven’t used Java SE in so long I wouldn’t even know if there were relevant incompatibilities; I mostly use Temurin)

@spinningthoughts honestly it’s just the first I found a few years ago when looking for block editor components. Haven’t used it in anger. One thing is it’s from the CodeMirror folks, so I imagine it’d work pretty well in combination.

@spinningthoughts I’m very curious how the official database integration’s gonna work out for Logseq (mixed with a little dread, sure).
I share the preference for native, but I don’t think Electron is the bottlneck. My strong hunch is it’s the insistence on ClojureScript and React without being world-class experts in either.
Got some Python code that loads my graph into a Kuzu graph db. Would be equivalent to a Logseq re-index.
Takes under 2s on my machine for 1,100 pages and their linked assets. EDIT: and that’s with Kuzu having only file-based db, not in-memory.

@spinningthoughts yah, same frustration with Java-only (and server-model only) graph databases. Found Kuzu and Cozo looking for something embeddable and accessible from not-Java.
I went with Kuzu as Cypher remains easier for me to understand than Datalog. You might have different experience?

@spinningthoughts and honestly I’m still thinking Electron for GUI. Native will work better up to a point but I just know I’d hit some kind of visualization need that’s hard in say Qt a solved problem in JS.
but yeah hm there’s always an embedded web view.
Anyways today I’m parsing my SiYuan notebooks because at least they have a structure.

@spinningthoughts item 3 is what had me treading carefully around Surreal and its license. I want to embed a database, and I want particularly nerdy folks to be able to open a REPL and do what they will.
Trilium does this and it’s awesome. Notes, branches, history, all accessible from both UX and an in-app SQL console. I just have frustrations with the choice of CKEditor and saving content as HTML.

@spinningthoughts There are a few PKMs out there that give the pieces for that (thinking of Trilium and org-roam mainly) but going from their reasonable defaults to your custom workflow is an exercise in cliff diving.

@elight I’ve been using Logseq, and mostly just use its journal pages to track my plan for the day, and separate project pages with task items for stuff I’d like to get to eventually maybe.
For things that are actually important I have started to use my email calendar, shared with family who can then provide me with a second, harder-to-ignore notification.
“Hey! Your appointment’s in an hour, right?”

@elight one semantic thing I’ve found tremendously helpful: I don’t make everything in my plan a task. Sometimes an item in my daily plan is just a link out to one of those projects I’d like to look at today if I have time.

Though it’s less about Tucson than about how brittle the power infrastructure was in our previous residence near Seattle. I got spoiled by Seattle – maybe six hours w/o electricity in 20 years – and Federal Way had a few days total over three years.
